DC Universe Online Powers Guide
Not sure which powers to pick up? In this guide, I will be revealing what class to select in DC Universe Online based on your preferred playstyle!
In DC Universe Online, your character’s abilities are aligned with an aspect referred to as “powers”. You are able to select a specific power for your character which will then determine how your character is played.
Within each power, there is are two possible specializations you can pick which determine the best way to play your class. Below, I will talk about each power specialization and the best ones to pick depending on how you want to play your character.
Fire
Within the fire tree, you can pick the immolation or ignition path. The immolation path helps deal damage to players who are very close to you. As a result, if you like to play an offensive character who is “in the face” of the enemy using a melee weapon (such as the fist weapon), this is a good choice.

The ignition path specializes in dealing damage by casting fire spells. This is more suited to playing a ranged damage dealing character that might use a rifle or a range blaster.
Ice
The ice specializations are cryogenics and storm powers. Cryogenics is the power for those that want to “tank” as it helps reduce damage.
To clarify what tanking is, if you and your buddies are fighting a boss and you want to take blows from the boss while your allies do the damage, this is your class. Combine with martial arts for best results.
Storm specialization works for both melee and ranged classes. Ranged casters using rifles, hand blasters, and bows can push players away, whereas melee players can draw them in.
Mental
The mental tree is for those that like to play caster classes. The telekinesis specialization appears to be one of the best for players who want to play offensive caster classes (typically a “mage” in other games).
The Illusion specialization is more for support and is ideal for players who want to engage in player versus player combat rather than fight against computer controlled enemies.
Nature
The nature tree holds two major roles: that of the hybrid and that of the healer. The shapeshifting specialization is ideal for players who like to play solo, as the different animal forms will allow you to perform different tasks.
As a shapeshifter, you can tank in bear form and attack in wolf form, depending on what the situation calls for. Do note that while hybrids are the “jack of all trades”, they are usually the master of none.
The plants specialization is one of the game’s major healing class. This power is great for group play and you will be sure to be in-demand for groups. However, you will lack offensive abilities if you select this specialization.
Sorcery
Contrary to its name, sorcery is not an all-out damage dealing magic class. There are two specializations: summoning and destiny. Summoning is an offensive caster that allows you to summon pets to aid you in combat.
As a result of having pets, Summoning a good soloing power to have, but typically poor computer intelligence makes pet-classes a bad choice for player versus player combat.
Destiny is one of the game’s major healing specializations. Destiny is a support specialization and allows you to buff your allies or enfeeble your opponents.
In other words, your spells will either make your allies do more damage or make your enemies do less damage, move slower, or suffer some negative effect. To use Destiny to its maximal effect you will want to play in a party.
I suspect that given the combination of the Polymorph spell and healing abilities, destiny powers will be the most in-demand powers in the entire game.
Gadgets
By large and far, gadgets appears to be a player versus player specialization tree. You can pick either tricks or traps as your specialization.
Tricks are used to deceive your enemy so you can sneak up on them, whereas traps are something you have to lure your enemy to in order to deal damage.
Both gadget specializations will require some skill to use and should be left to those who know they want to play in player versus player combat rather than player versus computer combat.
