DC Universe Online Guide

I created this DC Universe Online Guide to help players discover the best strategies, character combinations, and tips for creating the ultimate superhero (or supervillian) in DC Universe Online.
Unlike many other games with set classes, DC Universe Online allows players to create their own character by choosing a choice of weapon, movement mode, and power. The result of this is that players will over 100 different classes by mixing and matching different abilities!
The great thing about this feature is that it allows players to create superheroes that are completely unique from any other player. On your entire server, it is not very likely that there will be much more than a handful of heroes that are just like you. A good DC Universe online guide like this one will help you pick the best character.
Given the size of a server and the fact you can side with good or evil, it will be rare that you will run into another character who has the same powers as you, which is a really cool feature.
However, this feature has also lead to a lot of confusion amongst would-be heroes. The question on many players’ minds is.. what power, weapon, and movement combo should I pick?
That is where this DC Universe Online guide will come in handy. I have created a few helpful articles that you can use to understand your hero’s abilities so you can pick a hero that suits your preferred playstyle the best:
You do not want to pick your power, weapon, and movement type without first thinking about it a bit. This will be disastrous for your hero and will leave you with a really weak and ineffective character.
For example, the Immolation (fire) powers are meant to deal damage to enemies who are close to you. If you pick a weapon which relies on range (like a bow), your immolation powers will not be dealing any damage when you are firing from range!
If instead you chose a melee weapon like the 1-handed sword, your immolation powers would be a perfect fit. While you are slicing up the bad-guys with your sword, you would be also hitting them with your fire powers, which makes it a perfect fit!
My best advice when using this DC Universe Online Guide is to figure out exactly what exactly you want your character to play like choosing your hero’s abilities.
Let us take a look at standard MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game – this is the genre of games DCUO belongs to) classes and what their roles are.
- Damage Dealers, which specialize in dealing damage to enemies. Damage dealers are usually good at playing solo and are powerful in large-scale player versus player battles.
- Tanks, which specialize in taking damage from enemies. The best tank appears to be Ice / Martial Arts / Acrobatics at the moment, so this should be your choice if you want to be a tank.
- Healers, which specialize in healing tanks and damage dealers. Plant specialization within Nature and Destiny within Sorcery are only the real healing powers in this game and all healers in this game are hybrids (double as damage dealers or just good solo classes).
- Support classes, which offer beneficial bonuses to allies, boosting their strength. There are no true support classes in this game as all support classes have has decent damage-dealing abilities. Instead, some heroes have a “control” mode which gives them a variety of crowd control powers.
- Hybrids, which perform one or more of the above tasks with their own twist. An example of this is the Destiny specialization within Sorcery. These classes provide support and healing but still dish out plenty of damage.
If you are brand new to DCUO, my recommendation in this DC Universe Online guide is to start out as a damage dealer or a hybrid. You can always remake your character as another type once you get used to playing the game.
Hybrids are a great starting class because you get to play several roles. If you find you like one role over another, you can always then make a new character which specializes in that discipline.
